  1. UPDATE: It finally rained today! Plus a good thunderstorm. Of course I immediately tested out the signal during it and there weren't any issues at all. Speed tests were the same and link quality stayed at 100%. I'm glad the Arizona monsoons won't disrupt it!

  2. The microcenter in Denver is NOT as nice as that one. Jealous

  3. I wish Micro Center would open a Vegas location, their stores look so cool!!

  4. f-ing 1st world problems 😛

  5. Rule # 6 of attics. If you see or hear a creepy voice you don’t recognize up there. GTFO quickly as you can and call police (or exorcist). And then sell your house.

  6. For that short of a distance with clear line of sight, wireless will be almost as reliable as wired. I wouldn't even think twice about using wireless for that. I would use wireless for this until I was doing renovations or had nothing better to do at which time I would install a couple wires/fiber runs in a conduit for redundancy.

  7. I bought one of those neck AC units (Paul Hibbert review) and I use it every time I go in the attic in FL. It's a game changer.

  8. As someone who has recently installed PVC irrigation that 'trenching' job (if you can even call it that) would have been so incredibly easy. Including going under the path.

  9. But what about thunderstorms and bad weather Reid? Will that interfere with the speeds?

  10. Silicon caulk around all the screws you put in also.

  11. I run my link with just the cat6 / Poe. Don’t need 10gig

  12. We have the old UBB units at work running across a public street to a patch of land we lease, so getting fiber under the ground for that whole ordeal would have been in the 7-figure range. They have genuinely been the most reliable thing from Ubiquiti we have! You'd never know you weren't connected by a cable. They're maybe 200-300 feet from eachother.

FYI, for your APs, you should manually set the 2.4 GHz channels to 1, 6, and 11 instead of leaving them on Auto. Those channels have no overlap with each other. Channel 11 does have overlap with some of the Thread spectrum, and the other two do have some Zigbee overlap from what I understand, so make sure you know what channels your Zigbee network is using before setting the 2.4 GHz radios to one of those three!

  13. I friggin love Microcenter. Wish there was one closer.

  14. You could bring up some plywood a little wider than the joists and make a little catwalk. Be sure to keep any wiring out of the way and where sharp edges won't cut into wiring.

  15. I am a HUGE fan of Ubiquiti networking stuff and love the videos you make about networking

  16. Most people don't need to go to this expense to get network access to a garage. I think there would have been more value in this video if you identified the different options and the pros and cons of these options. In saying that networks are not your speciality… home automation is 😀

  17. How do you have your Tapo c120 connected to home assistant?

  18. Sponsored by Micro Centre (and Ubiquiti).

  19. Holy crap! That store is the Disney of automation! Wish we had one here.

  20. Thats insane Reed! Nice job!

  21. For such a short distance, you could have just used a directional outdoor access point unless you absolutely needed 6Mb in your shop. Only requires one PoE ethernet cable and is a lot less money. I use that solution for my shop and I get fantastic connections, including most of my back yard so I can jam to streaming audio when I'm mowing.

  22. Also watch out for nails in the attic.

  23. Very cool project I love the idea. I have no need for it but if I do get one of these detached spaces, I think I will go this route.

  24. Fun project! Glad it is working out great. I would be really surprised if you didn't get 100% link quality. I have used those bridges commercially and they reach over 1500ft.
A couple of suggestions for your attic rules:
    1. Wear a mask, you have fiber glass insulation in your attic. Get one with P100 or N100 particulate filters.
    2. Usually there are tons of nails sticking out. A hard hat is recommended.

  25. I did a very similar project to this and it was so successful im working on moving almost my entire lab and ALL 10g+ devices to fiber. I had no idea that my copper 10g sfp+ ports were so hot but after I replaced them all of a sudden many of my network switches and servers started working better (less heat throttling).

  26. As someone that lives in the north it's hard to imagine putting HVAC equipment in the attic. I realize it's common but god damn, attics are scary.

  27. With all the politeness, but 1000$ for wireless connection which can be done with 50$ straight fibre cable and 2 SFP modules. Ir will not depend on electricity (i mean connection itself and electricity needed for every RX/TX side in your case), no need for double data wiring and….. there is nothing to break if you use straight fibre connection.
It would be interesting idea if you'd need to solve a problem like really long distance or obstructions (like water etc) on the way, which could cause problems. But instead you just made a potential problem…. you got x20 price connection line with 2 additional break points and way slower than fibre btw. Honestly – i dont get idea of radio bridge for 8meters btw buildings (except advertising fee from Unify/Microcentre ofc, but its a really bad advertising of this product).
P.S. your area climate is quite dry i suppose, but still recheck silicone once per couple years (might be surprises there if temperature changes a lot).
