We’ve built some cool machines on the channel, but nothing is even close to the plan for our 3.6-petabyte archival storage array.

never say never 😉
there was a time they say: "no one will ever fill up more than 1GB of hard drive! completely impossible!" 😉
ZFS compression on video files is not going to give you anything
What happens when they are sick of adding more and more servers because the rack is getting full and they can’t manage the financial hit they take on power, a/c, replacements, hardware etc. do they get another rack and swallow the bills, or do they get another rack, delete old content move all drives from all existing servers to a massive JBOD and have one singular server for all new content
Linus tries exceptionally hard to be as smart as Jake, but just can't pull it off.
Great video, in short: "CHUNGUS".
Hello youtube
I really wanna see a loaded up Raid 0 in this thing 🤣🤣
Linus, I am local (Burnaby) and would love the help do your storage management. Get in touch I have my FreeNAAS home server but no backup due to money. But I can make your system drastically reduce the chances of data loss. Get in touch
"in the bedroom"???
Ltt in a nutshell: build a server to make a video of them making the server for that video
I'm a little late to the party commenting on such an old video, but I definitely detected Linus channeling Patrick a little bit while rattling off that SuperMicro model number.
i have one question. WHY DO YOU NEED THAT MUCH STORAGE!!!!????
How much storage would you like LMG?
LMG= Yes
SAS drives are so much easier and nicer to deal with in a JBOD setup… I hate using Interposers for SATA drives to use as JBOD in a SAS controller. SAS drives are CHEAP!!!! CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP…. I have 62 of them at 12TB each in my dual JBOD running a 50 disk shelf to a single computer running TrueNAS and then using FCoE to feed my hypervisors with dedicated SAS lanes for my VM's.
YES, METADATA AND DEDUP SSD is a MUST!!! On my host, I am running 8 2.5" SAS SSD for all my metadata/Dedup tables/Cache for my JBOD Disk Shelfs.
The fact Chungus now can pass as a measurement of thickness or largeness makes me realise how far the English language has changed in the time we have been alive. Non the less 3 PETABYTES OF DATA IN THE HANDS OF THE PUBLIC… that’s nothing short of an ACHIEVEMENT
akin n lng po yung mga lumang HDD at server nyo
Pointing out one slight bandwidth mistake, SAS bandwidth is typically measured in gbits, pcie in gigabytes. So pcie 4 8x won't be a bottleneck at all
I wanna see him doing exabyte project.
Can you give me that one?
3,600 Terabytes (TB)
1 TB = 9.8e-04 PB
=
3.51562 Petabytes (PB)
1 PB = 1,024 TB
8tb are big. this is enormous. 3.6 pb or 3600tb
do an ASMR-LTT server noise… those noises gives me the b..
Someone needs a data horder intervention.
Why use JBOD and not Raid? JBOD has no redundancy, as far as I know.
