The JBODs and the head server are here which means it’s FINALLY time to deploy the mother of all archival storage solutions, housing up to 270 hard drives. EEEEK.

Right. I'm done. I just…I do this for a living, and I'm not unsympathetic. But Y'ALL. WHAT IS YOUR BACKUP PLAN? What is your disaster recovery plan? You wouldn't go to this length if the data weren't critical, so why are you puttering around with silly hardware? Seriously. ServerMicro is awesome, but it is ON YOU to do this correctly! At least do an HA buildout with TrueNAS if you insist on having one and only one file server!
I'm not even going to touch the need for a proper datacenter at this point. Or proper not-bodged cooling, or…yes, it's expensive. But you ain't bush-league anymore. Please. Stop. It's time to grow up and do this properly.
Also, really: y'all need to be doing Ceph. Your friends at 45Drives know all about this. And doing Ceph would allow you to do backup strategy/async replication properly.

Holy f the amount of animations at the beginning with all the text was really annoying
When it gets to this level of data, it might be better to archive the data to the cloud. Much of the footage likely is never needed so online hot storage isn't needed.
Running 3.6PB isn't cheap when you factor in hardware, support, and electricity. Storage is a commodity, personally I would outsource a part of it.
doname un server para un proyecto
Why do you need so much computing power on a file server? All it's going to do is move data from one i/o port to another
112 bits of which 110 you will never use
So linus when are we going to see the first exabyte server you buil.
I am so glad you finally understood you can't build or run such systems without a professional approach that covers all the things that go beyond somehow making something work. Aka quality work 🙂
Wishing you common support in designing large-ish systems and no more data disasters.
2:37 gotta juice up those numbers. Those are rookie numbers.
step bro, i am stuck 16:45
ZFS is king
Hey Linus, can I have a Storinator pretty pretty pretty please? make like a HDD reject video sponsored by your drawer of old HDDs
why?
I would finally be able to install my entire steam library with a setup like this.
270? Naw…. Go absolutely insane…1,200 hard drives at the maximum amount of storage per disk possible. THAT’S game over!
i am happy to see that you also have trouble with server shelfs…
why not using cephfs?
11:07 No, I'm the monster. I peel only the peel away when the device dies 4-10 years later.
50-100 years in the future the humans then will view these as being archaic and oversized. Data centers will probably be no bigger than the average desk computer today and a pc capable of high end gaming will be no bigger than a small tablet. At least that’s what I hope. But considering how little we’ve progressed in the grand scheme of things part of me has doubts.
You are making so many errors in your soundproofing system that is ridiculous. You need a room inside a room, and yes it can be done in that space. you probably need to remove all the walls and make some simple things.
very nice playing around with so many drives. However your single point of failure remains as you have only one server.
What about a backup on a secondary system & location ?
RIP NCIX and your endless wacky sales
put them on a scale, 4 terrabyte obviously twice as heavy as 2 terrabyte. 😉
270 hard drives, each with its own rated and prescribed lifespan. On average, at the end of whatever that lifespan is, you will have bought this entire thing over again, just maintaining failed drives.
Technology is such a dead end.
Jake's job is so cool. He gets to design and build these amazing projects for Linus and spare no expense you normally would. With the house and everything he does at the office hes become my favorite face on LTT.
Actually, it’s LeviOsa, not LevioSAR…. 😅
Pov you use that server for gaming😅
Now load it up with the Mach.2 drives.
All nice, but lets be realistic, manufactures don't send us free ecc memory, drives or server brains in return for advertising.
But Can It Run Crysis?
Fell asleep while watching
Cool! Another video about all the hard rives where Linus stores all his videos
…
about the hard drives

where he stores all his videos
…
I mean… I was PRETTY sure only planes redirected to floatplane, not his onlyfans… but there was no way to know…
well, you have quite a single point of failure for such a big fileserver. Hope nothing goes wrong..
Haven't seen where you backup all your data…
where do i get server room protective paint, thank you in advance
Why dose he sound like Steve Carrel
I would like Pfsense to support GPON connectivity in order to get rid of the lt provider router
I would love to have one fo these
You would think they would have some nice dollies to make moving and installing these servers easier by this point in time, but they're still just awkwardly lifing these huge servers all these years later
I've got that same JBOD enclosure at work full of SSDs, it's wild. That one shelf and the machine it's connected to are worth more than my life.
I can only dream of my University's HPC having 3.5PB story….!
Can’t forget the fire in the old old server rooms and how many you guys had it was crazy but did a very nice recovery on that one
Wow I use single hdd 2 to 3 usbs to Conect all hard drive I think I am around 6 or 7 tb for just my movie server alone on top of YouTube when I get a better pc and server do to all on sorta everything mix all around no real home or place
If I success anytime, I wanna be a boss like he is
i love the editing in this video. give that editor a raise!
