DVHS was a flash in the pan in the early 2000s, bringing 1080i content to tape. Why did it fail, who bought these things, and most importantly was it even any good?

  1. 15:20 ah yes, I can see here that we have a man of culture. 🤏🤌

  2. “Spicy” seriously? 😮

  3. I can't believe you guys used the EXACT plasma tv my family still has in the living room. That's awesome

  4. DVD was never 720i. It was 720×480, which is 480i. 720i is 1280×720, which is a higher resolution than you could ever get on a standard video DVD. It's the lower of the "HD" resolutions defined for the transition to HD broadcast signals in the US, the other one being 1920×1080.

  5. I argued with several people back in the day that this existed. Thanks you for the justification some 20 years later

  6. I love that movie so much! Great choice for comparison.

  7. I am wondering what happen if you put one of those digital VHS tapes into a regular VHS player. It probably just display garbage.

  8. Isn't the 1280×768 plasma TV the limiting factor for a 1080i d-vhs ?

  9. very cool

  10. The only experience I've ever had with DVHS was in film school, where we used it to view raw footage at HD resolution before editing. It honestly never even occurred to me that any films were released on the format commercially.

  11. I have videotapes that are 30 years old that has better quality than every thing you showed I still watch them on my video player you just got some bad VHS tapes

  12. I still have some VCD's (Video CD) that had come out before or just as DVD's came out. Remember Betamax? had not heard of D-VHS but the existence of this tech does not surprise me. Cool stuff. Great vid and content 🙂

  13. dude you need to get the marsel M cable get the cinema version. see if that will take the HDVHS to 4k

  14. What people forget is ,to me, the most important part. Refresh rate. Many Plasma tvs had over 600hz. Our 4k has 60 and the expensive ones are 120hz. Rich people can find 240hz. Watch the massive difference between 60 hz and 240 refresh rate

  15. Love it, OMG Pioneer Plasma TVs were the best and one of the most expensive! I had a 50'' LG Plasma 1080P and I still believe it's the best TV I have ever had in picture quality and black level! I'm still sad that it that it broke down since it had a major issue with panels (known issue) and could not fix it. Man everyone saw it was extremely surprised by the quality of Plasma TV, I had the usual burn-ins but used to run a cleaner screen (built-in) and other extra apps I used and it worked! VHS the nostalgia 😇 Cheers with a great double double bud 😉

  16. I used to watch Video CD back in the Amiga CD32 days. The glorious resolution they had back then… was awful, but the colour was so much better than VHS was, so back then I felt Video CD was so much better.

When DVD came out, it was so next level that I bought them up so much thinking nothing could get better than this, and then eventually HD, BD and 4K followed and I now have a very large pile of DVD's that I will never financially recover from. Technology – gotta love it.

  17. I get nervous by Denzel starring at me

  18. You should switch to another hairdresser. This is the type of hair that's better in VHS quality.

  19. My 50" Gateway plasma weight was 105lbs 🤦🏾‍♂️

  20. When year 2000 hit my dad had moved on to a proper DVD Home Theater setup mann that thing hit hard asf action movies or cartoons we watched he always had it turned up. I remember My childhood movies differently especially the original finding nemo the EAC scene "grab the shell dude" was the Grestest thing I'd seen haha even Jurassic park the Trex paddock scene how it shook the whole house. sound is everything kids at the time won't say it but once they're adults they'll thank dad for a great experience they had watching their favourite movies which is also why Sony is close to me I grew up with that brand it gave me great memeories cause it was a Sony Home Theater System when I'm buying home theater today has to be a Sony.

  21. took me to the year 2023 to know that HD VHS exists =D

  22. Obviously Blu-Ray is superior to DVHS or DVD or VHS. And 4K Blu Ray is best of all. But there are some bad mastering and transfer jobs that stain the format it’s on.

  23. Linus Tech Moan

  24. homeboy dresses like a 4 year old

  25. Lol, see everything goes in circles from SP and LP disk, to magnetic tape, to video recorders, like eight track, VHS and Beta max, back to disk (12 inch Panasonic Lazer disk, then DVD, Blue Ray, UHD) which were invented to replace 1/2 inch and 1/4 tape backup devices,
Back to Tape HD as discussed here…..

The only issue for tape is indexing and search speed over disk access, when it comes to non continues data blocks. In which disk is always better than tape.

Anyone remember all that PC software that allowed you to back up your PC data to VHS by encoding your PC's disk data as video and audio.

  26. Dvhs can also have the hdmi feature equipped with it fwiw given that its caoable for soem models to do so.

  27. Y’all should do a video about how ps3 backed blue Ray and how Xbox backed hddvd

  28. I still have many D-VHS tapes, still have the player as well but don't think it is working any longer.

  29. we didn't have money but my dad was into this and it was a biiiiiig problem lol

  30. Hard to fully experience your test, everything you show of film footage looks pretty bad, not the digital part of your two, but you showing the film must downgrade it a lot, because if I put a random VHS or DVD on at home, the quality looks much better, the Blu-ray might just be Hurricane that isn't in high resolution, but looks bad, thinks it's because we don't see what you see
