  1. Many people are annoyed by the graph shown at 3:12; it's misleading because the horizontal axis is non-linear. We agree and we shouldn't have featured it in the video without fixing it first. If you want to see what that looks like, here's a link to our forum where a user named Ultraforce has done just that: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1462074-youtube-should-charge-for-4k-hear-me-out/?do=findComment&comment=15614203
We're sorry and will do better in the future. Thanks to our committed community for pointing this out and holding us to task 🙂

THIS is the most disliked video from 2022, Linus… Not the Plex Server one…

  2. Nobody NEEDS 4K in a YouTube video. If all your doing is, for example, watching this video, how does 4K make the content better? Google could lock me out at 720p I wouldn't care.
And I don't care about HDR for watching YouTube.
Now, if Google was a bonified streaming service like Netflix, that would be a different story because for movies I want 4K and HDR.

  3. Google/Alphabet/YouTube are evil. They are a social engineering conglomerate that wants to spy on and control people's minds. They have censored so many people and deleted countless videos/channels that doesn't fit their ideology or political stance. Their ultimate goal is extremely nefarious and wicked. YouTube was never meant to be a profit-making platform when they purchased it from the original group that made YouTube.

  4. I don't even have a 4K monitor lol I don't even care about 4k videos

Youtube doesn't get worse. People are just complaining more. My ad blocker still works flawlessly and that's by far the most important.

Saw a guy bragging about being a youtube premium user. Glorious times.

  5. My phone is only 1440p so I don't care about 4K. Plus it lags horribly in 1.5x speed if it's 60FPS

  6. yes but charge the people uploading in 4k not the viewer

  7. I’ve been on premium for a bit now, and the ad free experience is nice but it’s just a good peace of mind knowing i’m supporting my favourite creators.

  8. Once people were talking about upgrading OTA tv and someone mentioned 1080p+HDR would be the way to go

  9. Ad supported platforms inevitably have to resort to insane tactics to keep people consuming, including promoting content that makes people feel bad so they'll stay engaged. I support all the features becoming premium. The business model will be healthier for society and the creators will have a better revenue stream. If this means some people can't watch, google should be focusing on rolling out programs to give premium at a discount or free to select communities rather than inventing new sadistic tactics to keep people plugged in to the ad supported model. ad supported platforms are ruining the world.

  10. 18:05 I heard some TV stations break their ADs with 2 hours of content … per day … in total

  11. 17:09 Not since the left the garage, though. (once their motto was: "Don't do evil" )

  12. 13:03 On SDR displays?

  13. 10:14 I can even tell the difference in 360p

  14. 1:06 And here I am with YT premium running my videos on 360p to not stress my system too much, so I can run games on medium just over 20 fps.

  15. i got got yt premium cause of the ads and i spend so much time on the platform and the multitude of ads has gotten horrible so i just decided to subscribe

  16. Good thing that @MrBeast only uploads 1080p videos.

  17. My YouTube account has gone through many migrations and product shutdowns (Google Plus, Google Play Music, etc.), and is in some kind of broken state. I used to be subscribed to YouTube Premium, but now I literally can't anymore; my subscription was automatically cancelled and it won't let me sign up again. I use an adblocker because it's impossible to get support from YouTube, so I can't get my issue resolved where I can voluntarily give them money.

Meaning, anything they lock behind a paywall, I will lose access to forever (unless I make a completely new account, which would suck since this has been my YouTube account since 2006).

  18. Youtube should increase framete ratre over 60fps

  19. I see what you did there with the stadia controller, nice

  20. Now, can you tell me how much YouTube premium is worth? With the cost going up and no value added that I see, I am debating if it's worth or just picking a few creators and doing direct support.

  21. It seems YouTube is becoming unstable, given the content demands while simultaneously storing all of the videos ever released. Even if they utilize both ads and subscription revenue, it might not be enough and Google would have to start paying out of pocket to keep it going or start making compromises.

  22. Ironically THIS exact video is streaming at 2160p on my phone in a small floating window(that's right I'm a YTB premium user) when I'm replying to an email at the same time.

  23. I think it would be best if youtube allowed native 1080p60 videos to be uploaded without compression and made 1440p/2160p premium!

  24. I don't really care about all the mumbo jumbo. Google is one of the richest companies in the world and the general population is getting poorer every year. I bought my 4k TV, a paywall from a greedy company to access it's true potential is incredibly wrong. It's not like they need to, regardless of what they say. It's not up to us to pay for the R&D of their next "project"

  25. what do you mean its free?

  26. I was like what the hell is red tube cus i remember youtube premium used to be called youtube red and just to be sure i googled it and boy was that a mistake…

  27. The only issue with 4K being premium is smart 4K TVs. As long as they allowed smart TV users to consume 4K, since it's both a) difficult to buy a non-4K TV at this point, and b) buy a TV without smart features including extensive YouTube branding and integration, it would be a bad look. In fact, I feel like doing so could open them up to FTC or class action litigation, which might be why they may not ever use this limitation on TVs. As you said, though, most phones are 1440p-ish, or even 1080p-ish, so having 4K on them isn't totally necessary, and most people don't have 4K computer monitors. I'd also be more resistive to this if it was somehow outside of YouTube Premium; since you already get other useful features from the platform, as well as supporting creators more by being a paid user, I don't see it as being as terrible as it's been seen to be. Now, if they went further, either with 1440p being premium, or other issues, I would have a problem. But I consume hundreds of gigabytes of youtube a month, which to me seems like a net benefit for me at only the $10 or so I pay for YouTube Premium, given I haven't had to worry about ads for years now. I sure as hell don't consume that much bandwidth for any content provider combined, and it's likely only rivaled by me downloading games from Microsoft or Steam's CDNs when I get especially frisky with a new drive or SSD.

Now, what I would like, is for YouTube to stop forgetting that I want the highest quality video in the app, especially when I'm a paid member.

  28. We have a 1080p tv in our house, me and my family doesn't care about fancy graphics. And also, it would be very hard to download every single 4k youtube video on youtube. It would take a long time.

  29. With my houses devices, none of my devices have actual 4k+ display resolution

  30. I haven't seen an AD in so long I forgot people still have to watch them. $11 a month? I'm cool with it. Twitch users will sub to 10 of their favorite streamers so they don't have to watch ads but complain about the $11 for YT

  31. I saw 720p videos that are better than 1080p videos. So max quality being non-free is not such a big deal breaker. And because 4K is still premium quality for most consumers, those who have money to buy a 4K TV are more likely to have money for Youtube Premium. Maybe if google keeps the highest tier video quality behind a pay-wall, it's not such a big deal. But only the highest tier, or highest 2 tiers, you know, 8k and 4k right now.

  32. Linus: you should pay to watch youtube videos in 4k because of costs, space and bandwidth

uploads a video of himself talking into a camera in 4k

The fact a person with a 2 million dollar home is telling you that you, the youtube viewer has to foot a bill, is ridiculous. These people constantly upload click bait in 4k to youtube. Sounds to me like they should pay for it, not me.

  33. know what's the main problem?? Spam and spammers.
population is limited but the number of spam channels are increasing.
    posting tons of content.
so each person is able to create 1000s of channels and spam upload.. this is flooding the platform and also causing a massive forced distribution of views.

they need to introduce identity verification and limit the the number of channels per person or this spam uploads will never stop and Yt won't be able to keep up with the exponential upload rate.
people spam the platform for More money

  34. I have yt premium to skip ads and yt music no other reason.
Break up the service and let us itemize .
I'm more than likely going to apple music. Don't have time to spend crazy money just not to have ads and play with screen locked

  35. The problem is that the 1080p quality on YouTube is terrible. The image at 1080p on yt fell apart.

  36. I understand you 100%. It’s different switching from the consumer to a manufacturer too which I did. I have sooo much more respect for business owners and what goes into running them now. And I also despise how entitled some employees and be now.. when I used to think “yeah! We want more!”

Well, go start a business and incur that stress and costs. Linus.. if you have a bad week do you get to go to your staff crying “sorry.. rough week guys I can’t pay you”

Nope, they don’t give a fuck about your money problems.. they just want their money they worked for.

Basically.. the back end of running a business and not losing money is rough.. takes a tough team to pull it off. And weirdly enough.. the people doing nothing but enjoying the perks of that hard work.. somehow fee entitled to the fruits of it. I digress..

YouTube charging for 4K would help massively with overhead costs and server farms to chordal out 4k on tap to people like me itching to skip the next ad lol.

    You made a good point

  37. I think YouTube is already planning on archiving old videos and are starting by making it impossible for users to search for them. YouTube search is absolute trash now, and even if you search the exact name of less popular, older videos sometimes you cannot find it. instead, it dishes out 5 sections of recommended or related videos.

  38. Charge for 4k if you want. I will not pay.

  39. To me if you start charging to enjoy content in 4k you're just punishing those who build 4k capable PCs. Why would I upgrade to a 4k pc if I have to pay to enjoy it? I already have to jump through enough hoops to watch 4k as it is. YouTube makes plenty off of ads alone. They just want to keep a massive profit margin.

  40. Nice speech linus… 100 % agree

  41. Everyone acts in their own self interest… thats what makes companies big, small, broke, or become monopolies. We all do that. It's is far from a BAD thing. Just like Netflix pay per house thing… They backed down from that because people were unsusbcribing. Their self interest didn't meet others' self interest…

I agree with everything you said here. I think most users will be just fine watching their react videos and clickbait top 10 lists at 1080p. Now, one potential problem that I can see is YouTube going, "You know what? 1080p is still a lot of data, so we'll start charging for that as well." So I can see why people would be upset just from the fear that this will become a slippery slope. But unless I'm watching a video comparing a game's graphics between platforms, or comparing actual video media between formats, I don't need 4K on YouTube at all.

  42. 1440p is the sweet spot
