Colton’s WiFi is just like his work ethic: it SUCKS! How can we solve this problem? Ethernet? Maybe, but why worry about running new cables when he’s got plenty in his walls. MoCA and Powerline will get his house in order and get his internet running smoothly so he can once again become gainfully employed.

This was some rookie stuff from Linus lol
Did he really just drop his IP?
From 20 to 10ms is like going from 50fps to 100fps.
the orientation of the router and PC antennas matters, if they are not oriented symmetrically, the latency increases and is not constant. So that was the problem
Wow Mocha might actually be the solution to my problem here. I would like ethernet to my PC upstairs but am iffy on Powerline because of the oven and microwave.
Powerline is so bad for HiRes Audio streaming, especially as Linus mentionied when a lot of devices are plugged into the same distro brick
Nice to see linus and asmongold in same video 😀
I like the mini Asmongold cameo at 17:40 lmao
Colton's wife is beautiful!!! Lucky that an unemployed man can land such a woman.
Linus' video on NCIX tech tips about powerline vs pure ethernet got me on the powerline adapter train
Oh man the power line adapter. I’ve tried these so many times. They’ve been inconsistent at best but maybe they’ve gotten better. Observing speeds they were wildly all over the place depending on what was drawing power on that circuit at the time. But I love there are options!
That's nothing brother. My Wifi used to get to like 3700 m/s or 3800 m/s…….
Was any pre-planning done?? No judgement, that's the way I do it!
Maybe one of the worst Videos in a while.
can someone explain how coax can reach those speeds?
Colton's wife: "Yeah . . . Like A-U-L-K." LOL
This video would have been impressive 10 years ago
Fix my wifi pls
I have a router in my bedroom and it barely makes it way to the side bedroom due to the 2 bathrooms and the huge mirror between them
And to make it worse even putting a repeater near the bathroom doesn't help it go past the bathroom inside the living room which is between the bathroom and the bedroom
CAT5E ?, and here I am in Europe using CAT6A for my new house to futureproof it a bit now that gigabit speeds are becoming the norm.
Don't want to end up in the situation my parents found themselves in having a faster ISP connection then that their 20year old ethernet cabling can handle.
back when I had grandma wifi my shit would hit 500 ms.
Why on earth did you drill through the wall from the garage side. I swear Linus goes out of his way to do things the hard way on purpose.
Just like to point out that many of the "2Gb" powerline adapters are actually two 1Gb connections and if you want anything greater than 1Gb you need to aggregate the two ports together on both sides, assuming the devices on both sides have multiple RJ45 ports and support port aggregation.
I work with telecom and when you run into bizarre lock solution like the outdoor box. A screwdriver and force is your best friend
When I worked at best buy years ago, i sold these things like candy and people never returned them. Surprised it took Linus this long to make a video with em!!
@linustechtips & Colten, Telus provides their own gocoax modules that work with the built-in one on your router. I had them install it at my house with two additional wifi boosters. It worked beautifully. We disconnected the junction box to the mainline to reduce any congestion or anything, so the distribution of the ethernet is only throughout my house.
Hire the wife! NOW
Dam funny if linus was like okay I gata take all this back tho so
guys how to do the same test here ( 15:30 ) ? thanks
Colton should wall-mount his modem (like Riley) where that hole is.
Btw as a powerlan was the only viable option when I moved in my flat, you indeed can breach over to other breakers but should install a condensator kit (with link all live wires and neutral) to get the high frequencies to "jump" over them. The side effects of powerlan is that all of your house wire are now big antennas which is not so great …
powerline adaptors saved me big time. I rent a room in a house with other roommates and the wifi router is just too far away between too many walls. I used to always have terrible ping and reliably frequent complete drops in signal. playing rocket league was a pain in the ass, watching videos was tough, and even my downloads speeds were anemic.
PA isn't as fast as an ethernet cable, but I couldn't snake an 80 ft cable through our hallways so it was the best i can do, but it ended up being a wonderful solution. I have acceptable speed and a very stable connection. I installed it once, put a switch on my end and have everything in my room wired and solid.
The moca port on the modem is for moca to TV boxes
As a cable technician most cable/ satellite companies use moca to communicate between tv boxes and modems. I would advise separating the cables you’ll be using for Ethernet from your cable running to your tv/ cable modem to avoid interference which in turn will make your internet even worse and your tv and avoid splitters(if you’re using cable internet) but if it’s a direct coax line you should be good.
what is the cost of power consumption when run for the lifetime of the device?
