Pocket calculators are almost extinct now that we carry around mini-computers. Hardly! Calculators are still selling like crazy as cell phones and tablet calculators are not allowed in most classrooms. And certainly not on standardized tests. Why? Because of cheating such as Google searches and texting notes! And because teachers want the class to all to use the same calculator for ease of teaching and for no chance of confusion as all calculators work a bit differently from one another.
Plus the general public still surprisingly buys physical calculators. They just seem to be nicer to use than a cellphone or tablet calculator. Even if the cellphone calculator has the same exact capabilities.
There is just something nice about using a physical device made specifically for only calculating. And the clickiness of the physical buttons. Plus they don't get software glitches and don't crash as apps can. And you get continued software and hardware support from an actual company like Texas Instruments, or Casio that have actual customer service departments, or phone numbers you can call, or actual websites you can go to.
Yes, there are far fewer calculator companies now. But there are still some big names. Texas Instruments, HP, Casio, Sharp, Canon, and Victor still make calculators. And Texas Instruments, HP, and Casio still make top-tier graphing calculators that even have CAS capabilities for extremely advanced mathematics. 🙂
