Cloud storage is a fantastic solution for people with slow Internet who also need a solution to mass distribute files without exposing their own local network to people.
A nas is a situational solution. Not a replacement for everything.

I wish I could do the 3, 2, 1 method of data storage LOL
But sadly almost all forms of NAS devices cost too much, especially when you include the drive sizes I need.
Also the cost off site data storage is too expensive as well.
I'm a data hoarder and have close to 20TB's of stored data over multiple disks, and my daily basically is my NAS (Thermaltake Core W100 Case).
If anyone has any great ways I can get cheap 10TB-20TB HDD's (under the max of $100-$200 AUD each) I would love to know, thanks.
But don't forget that if SSD drives are not on power, then they loose the content after a year or so. For long term storage, the only affordable option is 25GB MDiscs.
Syncthing is also a great syncing software, and it's free and open source! I've been using it for years and has been extremely reliable for syncing all sort of data across all my devices (photo/music etc.)
As for the backing up, i've been using Duplicacy for a long time to backup daily to my server (just an old PC running windows in another room), and while it's definitely more pro-user oriented (command line and such) it has been super reliable and has saved me one time from catastrophic data loss.
Never NAS for important storage. Needs to be offline for security.

I'm thinking of also using all "refreshed" 10TB NAS drives as well ($70 on Newegg RN), honestly.. i'll be happy with RAID 1 2x 256GB M.2 cache and just three 10TB in RAID 5
Having your own system for backing up files on your phone instead of relying on Google to do that for you is great 🙂
Personally I went a different path. Using SyncThing on my NAS and Android phone I can get any directory on my phone synced up, not just photos. Also went for LAN only instead of cloud, don't see much point in exposing my stuff over the internet.

Try immich, an opensource server, web & mobile apps that auto backup your photos to your nas that really powerfull, have an machine learning to detect faces, scenes and the apps really familiar with Gphotos

I've had a big name brand NAS for six years now, and it's always been terribly slow. The data transfer is okay, but the web based GUI is just terrible.
Anyway, I use SyncThing to automatically sync my photos to my NAS as soon as I connect to my home Wi-Fi network. Works perfectly fine on an Android phone.

You should also be able to sync easily and for free with syncthing instead of your setup.. its open source and works like a charm – at least for me

Sure, who would be dumb enough to pay $5 a month and have certified experts store your data redundantly, worry about security, OS patches, and maintain the underlying software in perpetuity when you could roll your own hardware for several hundred dollars upfront plus electricity and constant maintenance and of course entertain the possibility of losing all your data because of a power outage, lightning strike, pet chewing on it, your kid stepping on it, a burglar breaking in to your home and stealing it, or other several thousand reasons. What a bargain!
At $180 I'd opt for an 10th gen mobo 16gb ram and power supply for $269

I am interested in the photosync thing, however not sure where you found the app for only $5, even with currency conversion taken into account peeping at the in app purchase options on the apple app store it looks like for a lifetime license they want NZ$29 or NZD49, not sure why there are two.
