How does the Gauss Gun work?
When the steel ball is pulled towards the magnet it creates an impulse of energy at the speed of sound. This energy carries through to the other side and expels the weakest link the magnetic chain at a high speed.

The ball seems to be shooting faster than the ball hitting the magnet.. So if you made the ball that shot forward hit another magnet and launch another ball etc.. You could make a pretty fast projectile.. I think

The ball bearing that sets it off has potential energy because it is far away from the magnet, which is attracted to it. When the ball hits the magnet, its potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. So, the energy does not come from the magnet. It comes from the act of taking the ball bearing away from the magnet in the first place.

It's stored in the magnet. Eventually, the magnet will "discharge" itself and lose its magnetism.

yes, as long as you had proprtionally larger ball bearings and holder, you could make this almost any size.
