I have too many broken ps3 controllers
I've found a lot of controllers in the trash (bulk trash, people clean out their homes and put it on the curb). Some work, some don't. Just recently I tried to fix a Dual Shock 2 where the left analog stick was stuck to the right (not physically though). I popped off the pots and carefully cleaned both them and the wipers. No change. I then took the analog stick out of a cheap Chinese USB controller that was broken and no longer worked, soldered it in place of the original and… Same damn thing! So I unsoldered the cord from the board and put it on another DS2 that someone had cord the cord off from. That one works 100%. What gets me is that if I rubbed my finger across the contacts for the horizontal pot while it was plugged in, but with the wiper out, I'd get horizontal movement, yet the moment I put the wiper back in, it would immediately go to the right.
I also fixed a Logitech Rumblepad 2 by puttng a new USB cord on it. Scrappers had cut the cord off, and I couldn't find any info online, so all I had to go by were the wire colors on the board. They used the standard USB colors, so I soldered a cable on, crossed my fingers, and it works perfectly. Good controller, but the case gives me a sore knuckle.
I've also fixed a couple gameport, 2-axis, 2-button joysticks that needed new cords. They're simple enough that they work with gameport to USB adapters.

I love how the cuts to soldering are someone else's hand. Obviously not the hands of Linus. Me too Linus. Me too. I can't solder worth crap. Unless it's pipe for plumbing. I'm a copper joint soldering wiz lol

Funny how the way to repair old controllers is to take two broken ones and make one mostly-working one. I finally understand Minecraft's repair mechanics. Unfortunate that there's not a way to just fix it to original quality.

Just a handy little tip for replacing batteries in a controller. The Radio Control car/boat/helicopter scene can offer some great batteries for low cost. But, try to avoid the RC drone batteries. There is some really bad ones out there. But if you are going to opt for a drone battery to replace a worn out controller battery then avoid the eBay and 3rd party Amazon sellers and buy from a reputable model shop.
What’s the point of tearing components out of a donor controller to fix a broken one? Is the donor controller broken too but has working parts the original needs? Will the buyer know which parts need fixing or, better yet, will the seller even be able to tell you which components are still working inside the donor controller? Seems like if you’re already buying a whole ‘nother controller it would make more sense to just replace it with a working one. Once you buy a donor controller and rip it apart you’re already creating the same amount of e-waste as if you’d simply replaced it.
I gave up on 1st party controllers when the PS2 came out. I don't like wired controllers.
Wireless 3rd party controllers with a Turbo button are where it's at IMO.
That ps2 controller is crazy AWESOME!

Rock Candy Xbox 360 controllers hold a special place in my heart too, when the shoulder button on my original 360 stopped working, the Rock Candy was a cheap option for my teenage self, and in the future when I got more bold I took apart my 360 controller and replaced the broken parts with parts from the Rock Candy, I no longer own my original Rock Candy but I Still have my original 360 controller fully functional thanks in part to Rock Candy

I have the green xbox rock candy controller.
I'd like to say I could get on board with this, but every time I've had something go wrong with a modern controller or phone, just the process of disassembling it being far more involved than removing some screws and putting them back has me far too intimidated to try. I don't have a soldering iron, I barely know how to use one, and I don't have any familarity removing and reapplying the kind of glue used in some modern electronics.
What annoys me the most is buttons sticking and making clacking noises.

Oh, no, the joysticks on the GC weren't great. I can't remember if the ps2/3 were worse, or if they were worse than expected being that I would have thought they were competing from a performance stand point. I don't recall the ps4 which I briefly had before returning the console damaged in shipping, but the xbox 360 control design spoiled my for joysticks. I still prefer mouse for fps, but if I was using the controller it would be xbox, or possibly the steam controller, but i haven't played fps on that enough to determine.
I will say though, the official GC controller has way better joysticks than a knock off, a night and day difference.
It was good for it's time. I didn't really care back then, though, I didn't have anything better back then, and the games were fun.
I don't agree with Linus' stance on AA battery controllers. Since %95 of people don't bother with rechargables they constantly cost money and enviromental damage.
You didnt mention if someone cracks the controller case then they can download an STL file and 3D print a new one. Including buttons

A few weeks back, My bumper on my xbox controller which had been dodgy for a while completly broke, so i took apart the controller and nothing seemed to be broken, I cleaned it all out and put it all back together, It worked for a hour or 2, then broke again, so I went online to get a new one but all the new series controllers were out of stock so I ended up getting my first ps controller, Im pretty happy with the PS5 controller….
I also repaired a joycon by replacing the whole joystick because it used to drift upwards badly, Now the joycon works fine 😀

To me xbox controlers have one advantage over ps contrilers, ant that is that you can swap the batterys easily otherwise they are just odd to me, I dont like the asymmetry
