Deals for Days. Big home savings are happening now.
lmao ifixit sold me a battery that inflated inside my computer after a years of use which bent the frame of the computer. So ima skip on your sponsor lol
Definitely on the tour. There’s so much misinformation about various kinds of recycling it would really help
If you want to repair those batteries… 1st be patient 2nd watch a youtube tutorial about spot welding . Those batteries can easily be repaired (spot welded). Those sparks are due to improper spot welding
You really should wear a welding mask any time you do welding no matter how small the flame.
Quitters
You can actually deal with this problem by soldering on small leads to a separate DC power supply to keep the BMS live while working on the pack and than remove these after the new cells have been attached.
why do you need sanding belts?
Planned obsolescence is not malicious. It's a byproduct of modern capitalism and is mostly the fault of the consumer.
Are new Lifepo batteries BMSs evil like this? Especially the big brands like Battleborn? I just installed a large solar system in my RV with all Victron and 2 Battle Born Game changers. When the 10 year warranty is up and these massive Lifepo batteries start to fail can they be serviced? Or will the BMS self destruct? I don't think anyone has tested this yet I know I won't at over $2 K for one battery. Time will tell unless someone with way more $$$ to burn sacrifices one of any name brand to see if the Custom BMSs is Evil 🙈🔥😡
They were doing this with Dell Laptop batteries the BMS would disabled itself if it lost power. I managed to get around it by carefully connecting power to it before cutting the cell wires so it never lost power. But if the life line failed even for a second it was game over for that BMS. This is nothing new greed is way more important to CEOs and Shareholders than the environment!!! It won't change unless they are forced to stop the BS for a few extra $$$$ to buy a new jet each year instead of every 5 Years! People hate gov oversight but it's unfortunate we need someone to put a size 12 where the sun doesn't shine sometimes.
Why don't you have Halen r12 fire extinguishers they'll put out a lithium fire not only do they put out the lithium fire they cool down the lithium battery to thus prevent recognition from the thermal runaway etc Halon r12 is the refrigerant that used to be used in air conditioners and for HVAC people it's $20,000 fine if they let one ounce out however as a fire extinguisher are 12 can be released to the atmosphere with no fine even if you're testing so take your old air conditioner alcohol in it and you got to fire extinguisher new air conditioners use flammables so make sure it's not our 450 or 600 cuz r600 is butane
I replace cells on my batteries all the timep
I'm fairly confident most people including me just throw away batteries when they're done with them because it's not easy to recycle them I don't feel like going out of my way
I have re-powered some Lithium battery packs using low tech procedures (soldering instead of spot welding; reusing nickel tabs; etc). So far, I have not had any problems, other than one pack dying much sooner than the others. Did you check the cells that originally sparked? I’ll bet that they were still good.
You could try diy automatic welding station on budget
it would be cool to see how batteries are actually recyckled.
I'm using a HP laptop from 2007 and its battery died when it was exactly 10 years old (with an accuracy of 1 week), what a coincidence.
I steal scooter batteries to make power banks with individual cells in them
You could have had an external PSU to keep the BMS alive while replacing the batteries… just to see the outcome.
i replaced MANY cells in batteries just with soldering. no welding
just an FYI you sound use a battery tester to charge them up and discharge them before spot welding. you can also capacity test the old cells and use the old ones for single cell flashlights and small projects and such.
What happens if you don't use genuine nickel strips? Would copper or stainless not work?
I'm pretty sure you're over reacting to the sparks. At worst it's a spark from two cells balancing, one cell current to another. If the cells don't noticeably heat up to dangerous temperatures there is absolutely no danger. Looks like the sparks are coming from the welder rather than it being a cell discharge.
Just a few weeks ago I finally got around painting the spot on the ceiling of my room where a couple of Li-ion cels hit after igniting and taking off like rockets.
And I did have to throw away a blanket on my bed that was ruined by the sparks of molten metal that came out of another battery I was charging near my bed where, thankfully, I was not sleeping at the time.
I learned the lessons. The hard f**** way, but I learned them.
My advice is to learn them the right way. Like Linus over here is explaining.
I see a lot of those evil battery Management systems in the construction tools they sell for such expensive prices Makita is very well known for that Dewalt, porter cable, craftsmen, Ryobi and even Milwaukee is not out of their woods. I prefer Hilti which doesn't seem to be nearly as bad as some of those other brands I mentioned. I have some of their batteries that are 10 years old that still work far better than any other battery I have that's even 4 years old. And those other batteries I have are DeWalt 18 volt and Milwaukee V18. Mine are 22 Volts that also take and will run any of Hilti's 18 volt tools. You also you go by the tool stores that rents to you and you see what they're renting. That's the tools you want if you're doing this at any kind of repetitive work like construction jobs or mechanical.
Linus said they have gloves but he didn’t wear them😅
I have designed Li-Ion battery packs for commercial sale and can say that in the case of high end smart battery packs with charge tracking and modeling capabilities, it is not a simple matter of just replacing cells. On our packs, the battery monitor chip required precise initial conditions for each cell in the pack in order to provide a sufficiently accurate lifetime prediction. Of course, the packs I designed were for medical devices, and I think equipment like cameras and power tools do not require that level of precision and I agree with the premise that batteries should be designed to be as serviceable as the use application allows.
Battery welding is actually much easier than that. I realize he's a novice, but the current was set far too high. When set right, the weld occurs so fast that there's no time to heat the surrounding metal.
Good thing the bms did not work. That means people can’t resell old goods as new.
actually hilarious that i was thinking that it's funny they use the same kind of batteries i had in my vape and then they go and get the exact cells I had from a "vape shop we have a good enough relationship with"
You literally told the reason they do this in the video. The problem with having a "resettable" BMS, is just that people that don't understand the dangers of lithium cells, will just save some bucks by resetting the battery pack WITHOUT swapping the cells, which can lead to disaster.
And then the company will get the blame, for example, if someone have a camera, their battery pack "dies" because its considered "spent", and then some customer googles "X battery pack reset" and finds the procedure to reset the BMS (which should be done after a cell swap) but does it WITHOUT swapping the cells.
Then sells the camera with the reset battery pack (which will now charge up fully but in a unsafe way) on for example craigslist, and then battery pack explodes in the hands of the new owner, which now, not understanding that the previous owner did a unsafe reset on the pack, now blames the manufacturer of the thing.
OR EVEN WORSE: Buying the camera new, then replacing the new battery pack with the old reset battery pack.
Then reseals the package, and returns the camera to the shop, which checks the battery pack and it says "0 hours" because it have been reset.
And then sells it as-new to a customer, which now gets a unsafe battery back which explodes.
Thats why I think its a good thing that they block battery repair, but then they should repair the batteries themselves in a safe way.
Like Bebop does. I don't think you would have anything against if Bebop implemented a encryption DRM thing in their BMS but for which Bebop had the unlock key to, and they could do the cell swap safely.
For cars, there are coming a new standard now for cars, called SERMI. That will replace the anti-theft DRM on today's cars where only the manufacturer can create ignition keys for the car. Instead, anyone that have been approved by the government will be able to create ignition keys for any car.
Maybe something similiar could be created in the future for BMS:es. All BMSes would then legally be required to use the same encryption key for the DRM, and then only approved "battery repair centres" (that are accredited and approved by the government for safe cell swaps) would have the corresponding unlock keys to safely reset the BMS.
Then this enviromental problem with batteries would not exist, but still so battery repairs would be forced to be done in a safe way.
Why I hate companies at times they sell you a product that you can't repair and I'm like I purchased this item its mine I should be able to modify it in any shape or form I want
18:31 let’s go 😂 I wanna know ❤
At least they weren't UnitPackPower batteries
"recycle properly" you mean in most cases, give them back to the manufacturer, so they can redo them and resell them for full price? They should be properly disposed of, not recycled back into the system! Also this just shows corporate greed at its finest, can't be fixed, even by professionals, buy more instead. Definitely need more companies that produce products that can either be user friendly repaired or professionally repaired in some capacity!
"6.98 we're short" Linus your Bethesda is showing
Turn your weld time down…
It's as basic as that… Once the bms has 0 volts from disconnecting the battery it no longer works. It s controller will just become erased.
I accidently shorted a LiPo battery once. just a small one but it was quite spectacular. it bloated heavily and got VERY warm. threw it out the next window ASAP, was not cool. people, be careful with batteries.
The printer needs cyan
Planned Obscolescence. The AI is already here, Planning.
Apple use a lot of the evil bms
I'm surprised you didn't buy the batteries from IMR Batteries.
Check out the facility in person!
There is absolutely no reason to throw those cells away. The spark is because you were not applying pressure properly and there was a small airgap for a spark to jump. Those were not ruptured cells.
I love to see Colin the electrician.
somehow I don't doubt that you guys have a good relationship with your local vape shop
I first learned about planned obselecense in my IT class. It blew my mind. I was thinking so many countries make big manufacturers adhere to certain emission regulations, but no one seems to carethat much about planned obsolescence except for the user? Just blows my mind.
logitech opted to send me a brand new PRO X LIGHTSPEED instead of replace the battery
