We’ve said more than once to never buy a used hard drive. But file sizes are increasing across the board, so could it actually make more sense to turn to the used market – like ebay or craigslist – for more storage capacity…even if the hard drives were used for crypto mining?

  1. I have about 150TB I need to back up. Given the outrageous prices of hard drives right now I am definitely considering going used. But I have heard the opposite about Chia mining. That it ruins hard drives.

  2. boring

  3. I have bought a cheap external hard drive from suspicious sites that when shucked contained a failing second hand drive

  4. Me who just bought a hard drive for 18.00 from eBay 💀

  5. Wouldn't even consider getting a HDD in the first place. I bought a used samsung sata from bestbuy geeksquad refurbish. Supposedly they use them a couple times and then send them off for resale

  6. Bought 2 HGST 1 terabyte "new" ENTERPRISE HDs from reseller "Nxx Exx" at around $30 each, but found on opening the package the drives were made back in August, 2014, by Toshiba, itself (long since out of the HD business). Aside from being very, very old Toshiba inventory, this immediately raised a static storage issue (lubrication failure on servo linkage).
These Nxx Exx Marketplace HDs appeared on the Nxx Exx website with a loud page claiming a "FIVE year OEM warranty", which Nxx Exx reduced to THREE years in its fine print at website product page bottom. Nxx Exx displayed both warranty claims, simultaneously, on its website.
Yet, on calling the actual Nxx Exx Marketplace reseller, he said the warranty was only ONE or TWO years– but none of that claim was evident from the product web page.
In summary, steer very wide of Nxx Exx Marketplace HDs unless you confirm everything in writing. And on receipt, check/test the HDs thoroughly.
    * I returned the two HDs– UNOPENED– to the Nxx Exx reseller. I called to request a FEDEX prepaid label, shipped the drives, and after a week, got a prompt refund.

  7. @6:23 bruh its recurring not reoccuring

  8. Crypto crash means R.A.I.D=Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives

Let me refer you to Ebays 1995 policy documentation (TL:DR The Marketplace presentation within ebay is based on your computer's port layout and who would like to sell you something by utilizing a specific 'approved' port)

  9. 4:12 don't think the editer got the memo

  10. I wanna build or buy my own NAS. But the single most probably main reason I'm hesitant to do so and still using cloud storage is the AI capabilities of Google photos. The main reason I opted for cloud storage is that whenever I take a picture it's set to automatically be backed up to Google photos and I know I can find alternatives to initiate automatic backups. But the search feature in Google photos is irreplaceable to me. I can search and find almost anything in my photo collection. I can search for specific people, places etc.

Is there a way to search and sort everything in my NAS like I do in Google Photos.

  11. dont waste a dime on HDD at all, new or used. They are shitty and will just fail. SSD's are getting quite a bit cheaper. Not worth spending money on somthing if you have to worry about it when buying it.

  12. Fuck crypto i hope the whole crypto thing just fails. Dont make our pc parts more expensive crypto miner assholes.

  13. Found 500gb for $2 a piece. Using for used pre builds. Should arrive tomorrow. Will test them all

  14. Klein multibit, screwdriver, professional, and popular screwdriver $ 14.00 on Amazon!!!
Why is the LTT screwdriver so expensive you could’ve just bought any screwdriver and slap the sticker on it at that point still would’ve been way cheaper

  15. pretty much all the hard drives i buy are older lower capacity, 'used' and so far only 2 duds,

  16. WOW 20Tb drives! Its clearly been a while since I looked at a mechanical drives. The issue for me isn't reliability per se, its just that 20Tb is a mind boggling amount of data to lose in the blink of an eye. My broadband, not the fastest but not terrible, I can download 1Gb in appx 5min. Assuming I could re-download what was lost, it'd take me 2 months non-stop which is a pain no matter what was on the drive. Surely you have to buy these in three's or five's for some level of redundancy, making the reliability stats less of an issue.

  17. I’ve had a 6tb hard drive that I bought from eBay for 4 years and it still is awesome. Maybe got lucky idk 🤷🏼

  18. Here in most of Europe you can't buy even enough RAM for 70 euros let alone build a entire PC that can still work today …

  19. This is a first video I've watched from you guys in months if not over a year because the fact that you shove sponsors and push sponsorships so much it's super annoying Three sponsors in one 13 and 1/2 minute video are you serious…..

I'd be wary of platforming Wendel or Level1Techs. Their "Level1News" have frequently voiced racist asides and recently featured an anti-trans hate website as a source. I used to watch them but noticed the amount of xenophobic dog-whistles just go unchallenged. Transparently toxicly RW presenting themselves as "centrists". Beware.

  20. I have a drive with 50K power on hours, I've had it for years and it won't die
It's a WD Caviar Black btw

Can you do a project where you run these in ZFS for example, to failure?

  21. My 3tb drive is over 80k hours. Since 2012

  22. What's the cache?

  23. so the TLDR is: if it's for backups (specially in RAID5) then used HDDs are just fine.
