Jesus I would love to work at a place that just had so many parts on site. I have to fill out a purchase request, explain to someone who has no idea what I am saying why I need it. I could legit use language like "I need a double plexor for full duplex networking failover detection".

Is there a good router out there today? I'm still using an Apple Airport Extreme. I tried a couple routers and they sucked compared to the Apple router.

It doesn't take long for neat and tidy network cabling becoming a rat's nest when upgrading infrastructure. Been there. As for a "dedicated" router from Cisco with custom ASICs, it could easily cost 20K plus, including security firmware.
Very weird. I checked today and Netgate says that the upcoming 2.7 will be FreeBSD 14.0. They must have seen this video and heard the smack talk!

I love that Jake has went from Linux's "sidekick" on these projects to a very competent network engineer. Using the VLAN switch as a media converter to work around missing NIC was a good call.
you could just buy a $1000 mikrotik router which will do 20gbps instead of building some janky pfsense rubbish.

The one thing I don't get is why they have such a small and inconvenient server room.

pfSense = no WiFi AX AP mode support and general piss poor WIFI support in general, that a side both pfSense and OpnSense are both great routers, but separate access points required for todays home and office networks.

Mellanox is way better & compatible, also try mikrotik with wireshark which is faster with NAT444 and within mikrotik you can add multiple docker containers

When you get to a 100Gbps get a Palo Alto firewall. Expensive but worth it.
Curious if you'd still have those issues when the next version of pfSense comes out. At the time pfSense 2.7.X was still going to be on FreeBSD 12.3 but now it will be on 14.0.
