  1. I did just this! Took my old A8-7600 APU system and I currently use it as a Minecraft server. All I had to do was install Linux and Minecraft. Nothing else!

  2. Did this at my job with an old PC they had. We needed a way for tablets in the shop to access blueprints on a Windows network share. It had to be a simple easy one app solution for the tablet side. So I turned the old PC into a web server that would access the network share, list all jobs and blueprints, then when a blueprint was chosen it would fetch the blueprint pdf and using some nodejs magic displays the blueprint right in the Android web browser. Everything is done in the browser on the tablet side. I'm quite proud of it considering I'm just a shop guy myself and not an IT guy by trade. I just know how to do stuff.

  3. i ended up literaally tearning down my old pc, but it was worth it cuz i found the 1 tb hard drive and a 255 gb ssd

  4. understand the sponsored message but all these features are available on openmediavault…

  5. Who needs a DVD drive now a days? Me… I had no choice to use the mobo cd go install my wifi drivers because Asus thought it would be a good idea to NOT put the realtek wifi and lan drivers on their website for me when I built a new PC. 😡

  6. I have a OptiPlex 7020 derived gaming pc that I'm retiring tomorrow. The market has finally blessed me with a i7-12700kf and a noctua 3070. Goodbye i7-4770. Farewell gtx1060. Good riddance 100% fans all the time.

  7. I'm making an old pc host an ark server. My first issue is I don't have a device that accepts vga for display lol.

  8. WOW Linus has changed in a few years!!

  9. yay a purpose for my old laptop

  10. I'm trying to convert my old gaming pc into a server but probably need to rebuild it in a smaller form factor case too. I like the video but I also was hoping it would show how to rebuild and make an old gaming pc a server/media pc. Thanks guys!

  11. this is the first LTT vid i have watched probably because I typically do not like to watch youtubes to learn how to do something new due to the fact that most videos i come across are at least 50% about some unrelated blather or another, which almost always come before the instructions. Anthony your vid is great dude. If I knew you in real life I feel like we would hang out and smoke gonja and mod PC games and then play them.

  12. I Came across a Complete Lenovo ThinkCentre Tower Marked Machine 7843, it has a old Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 Duo Processor, it had no Graphics Card, and Was only $14 dollars, it only has 4 gigs of Ram, but The last owner put a Barracuda 500 Gb Main Drive in it. I could Not resist taking it home to see if it works, and it Does ! I put a AMD RX 550 4 gig Graphics Card in it I have as a Trial and Error Card, from my first Build long ago, it Came On and Looked Pretty Great For Almost Nothing, The PC is Named Mom, LOL So that explains its Clean state and Running Fine Situation. Now What to Do with it ! LOL A Server Maybe, or just a Back Up PC for Troubleshooting My Real Gaming Rig. The Date on The PC is 2009 for its Build from factory… I think it May Make Something Useful like a Server, But For Now its Going on a Shelf for Back Up Work if Needed . Windows 7 Home edition is in the PC, it Had The Pro Version Sticker, but X is on it for Replacing it with Home Version. Strange !

  13. Using an ancient consumer dell psu with those hdds o-o

  14. Thanks for this video! You really do explain things in terms a layperson can understand! As a layperson, I greatly appreciate this. I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend!

  15. This guy! 👍🏾😆 Learned a lot and he's hilarious!

  16. This remind me back then when our old 486 became our first routers… but nowaday is it really worth it the extra electricity costs? and the extra hardware? and the headache you gonna have when an old drives fails with all your data?

  17. My old PC finally died when after 9 years of heavy duty gaming on it, and multiple upgrades, the motherboard finally gave up the ghost. It was the motherboard, after a full replacing of the PSU with a significantly more powerful one, the removal of everything save the Boot OS, and replacement of the motherboard batteries, she still couldn't power on.

After moving everything save the motherboard and CPU to a new chassis, everything worked 2nd try (forgot to turn on the PSU after turning it off to conduct the move). No other parts where changed.

  18. i'm totally not offended

  19. AW 8,000 comments.
YOU make several fatal mistakes – which is why you didn't show it working.
    1) picking that Optiplex 990 was a mistake.
    * LIMIT 2 TB drive size (deal killer) (the 12TB drives show up as 2TB)
    * In-between old BIOS with new File System (makes support "special" – deal killer)
    * Only has USB 2.0, mandating a controller board and 3.1 hub
    * Requires Half-height PCIE cards – only 3 total.
    2) No need to pull the DVD: It has a second HD carrier under the top one, and 3 ports. Assuming it lets you mirror the boot drive – I think that's common.
    3) NVIDIA GT1030 GPU works fine in it
    4) Why would you reset the machine if you're using it?
You should have picked something you could actually recommend.

  20. So, can I use this as a local server to open a local web application securely?
I'm using WEB-NFC for Android but when I access the web application via local hosts the NFC wouldn't work because it isn't secure

  21. Doing this build now on almost the same machine. In eBay , search for Intel i7 desktop, sort for price. Cheaper than a RPI 4 anything..

  22. 10.9 terabytes that’s 12 terabytes lol

  23. 10.9 Terabytes.. yep that's 12 Terabytes… I love it

  24. Toads speak?

  25. Great tips

  26. My "aging closet pc" is a 486…..

  27. Budget builds are amazing.

  28. 🤢you guys try to hard to be funny

  29. i know I'm a year late but, i also have an old optiplex that i actually used to host my minecraft server! this video speaks to me!

  30. You need your own channel! Unless you already have one. In that case what is it?

  31. better to get a refurbished REAL server board with ECC

  32. That's what I'm doing with my old HP that's so old it came with Vista. Works fine for serving movies and music to Plex.

  33. The thing about using Plex as a media server (or any other server), you gotta leave on the computer runing 24/7 which might cost electricity. Also, what if someone hacks your network. I am new at this so I am wondering about the use cases for making my old computer into a server.

I forgot to add also wear and tear on the computer components if leaving the server running on all day as well.

  34. Did Alex write this one? It reads like he talks.

I tried this, but mid setting it up, my power supply bit the dust and wrecked the motherboard in the process, RIP

  35. tried to use a bootable usb to install linux on another usb but it didnt want to work lol

  36. Anthony is like that nerdy teddy bear you've always wanted. 🥹

  37. I have an old gaming pc this is about to be crazy

  38. I'm starting to watch this channel for Anthony instead of anyone else

  39. RIP $30 raspberry pie in 2023

  40. Can you run a server and use it as a storage system?

  41. I actually thought the video ended at 7:17 LOL 😂😂

  42. If you'd turn a windows XP computer into a file server, would it get hacked?

  43. I'd love to see this same video but with old phones!
