you should hav stretched the image to fit the screen for the 1080p, then try to acurately scale the images (dimensionally) to match the portable units.

The 1440p but hurt me as someone who uses an old Dell 27" 1440p monitor from 2013 because he currently can't afford anything newer and it still works
Also, that bit about the Wii U GamePad… well, it was great for playing Splatoon… map overview and Super Jumps while the action happened on the primary display
and im here plying 640×580 streched (custom resolution so i can actual see heads) and its playable

how to use lower resolutions with those black zones? Normally games is trying to fit full screen
I reopened Borderlands 2 for first time in over 11-12 years and all my video settings were the same. Monitor is 3440×1440 with a 3080, it opened it in 1024×768 on medium low 😂😂😂

Dimensions of individual pixels matter too. As pixels have shrunk in size as tech evolves over time them obviously it’ll be significantly smaller if you tried to replicate it on a modern screen.
