Nvidia’s RTX Remix is a powerful tool, but it still takes developers and modders a lot of work to visually modernize old games with it. Orbifold Studio has been hard at work creating Half-Life 2 RTX, and the demo is finally here! How does it look compared to the original?

I misspoke about Morrowind having physics at 11:51, it started with Oblivion -np

This looks great and I definitely want to try it out, but… I think I'll still prefer the original visuals. The original lighting has a melancholy tone that fits the Soviet-esque setting, especially in areas where the most important story events occur. I'd much rather see this treatment for Skyrim or Morrowind where warm shadows and improved fire effects will compliment the story and setting.
I'm not sure if the audio in the background is from HL2 but all the way through at least the first 2 minutes there's a repetitive bell tinkling sound happen in the back right of the audio. It's really distracting, especially with big headphones on. Great video though.
HL2 was so cool, and it just got to sup Zero! I so want to play this when released!
Save yourself the download and skip this. It's a stuttering mess with really low frame rates, it's blurry and has smearing. Just play the original with a high res texture pack or something.
man, these co-hosts are trying hard, tf
This is just a sponsored ad
FFS this is not an achievement. when trying to spot the difference on a 20 year old game on a $5k gpu that i used to run at full graphics off a $300 6600GT
We've waited for 2 decades for Half Life 3. If it came out one day i would cry like a baby!!
Teeny tiny lot of scaremongering going on here. I have a higher-end PC, but no longer top of the line – 7800X3D, 4090, 32GB. Using 40-series frame-gen, 3440×1440, and DLAA Quality mode, I get over 100fps at max detail levels. I mean, yes, if you insist on trying to run DLAA or native 4K, any hardware is going to struggle here – but you….don't have to.
I also reckon this release is getting undeserved levels of hype. A lot of the RTX effects are very subtle, and frankly, this isn't the second coming of Christ here. It's a nice freebie, but I played HL2 the first time around 20-odd years ago and I'm over it. There are still the occasional bits of older-skool effects, and frankly, this merely looks like "what I expect from a modern title now".
Is it just a demo tho of Ravenholm or the full game RTX?
"meh" I'd rather have a new half life game that looks like original HL2 instead of this.
You guys should've have called bringus to this video
This would have looked and ran so much better if they would've just went for traditional rendering techniques instead of that ray tracing crap.
TOTALLY not sponsored by the leather jacket in the midst of poor 50XX sales…
Best way to play hl is vr
Why does half this video spend an age talking about DLSS and frame gen!? Runs absolutely fine at native 4k on a 4080.
The fuzziness in the lights is fixed by DLSS Ray Reconstruction, that's used to enhance the sample rate used to calculate light bounces. It's a separate thing from DLSS Super Resolution.
The Digital Foundry video does a better job of breaking down some of the more technical aspects of the technology.
Up-scaled textures looks nice, but i am still not that blow away by ray traced lightning. Yes it looks better, but "3500 Euros of GPU"-better? The sheer hit performance takes is just bonkers. With how the gaming industry is leaning towards frame-gen for playable framerates, i am not that optimistic about it getting better in the next years. There is financial incentive for nvidia to make you buy a 90 series, there is financial incentive to just not optimize and tell customers to enable framegen. I'd rather have playable native framerates then artifacts, short-comings and lightning that looks a bit better. So… I'd rather play the original with upscaled textures.
When you get bullied into loving HL2.
Elijah is not supposed to just play this, he must love it, like he was there 20 years ago
Valve can only count to 2! jk lol Hope one day they will make a great Half Life 3 Game. I miss playing Half Life 2: Death Match. Next time play on a 3070, 4070ti super or AMD 7900xtx not These high-end cards that people are not going to play games like this.
I Always turn off DLSS, I dont like the ghosting and blur it creates.
HL2 was revolutionary and I've played almost all half-life series game back in the day, but lots of good games nowadays have "heavily inspired" mechanics and plot devices. This means that for the average young gamer that has played only those newer games, going back to HL2 will just feel like an older, less polished game. It will NEVER feel the same, or even revolutionary. People just need to stop with the nostalgia goggles.
We're not here for gaming content
90% of this is just replaced assets.
can you launch RTX Remix on an AMD 9070xt card?
Please choose some music that doesnt have a repetitive high beep every few seconds next time
NGL. i prefer the original. I dont like how RT does a lot of lightning. true some of it looks good, but some of it does not look good.
overrated game imo
I just bought an rx 580 used for 50$
Given the level of performance I'm not impressed.
YOU NEED TO MAKE MORE VIDEOS WITH JUST THESE THREE GUYS TBH
Simple asset upgrade and higher texture resolution would have done a fine job. Putting RTX into it and tanking the fps makes no sense in my honest opinion.
They're overhauling the whole game? So you're telling me that this isn't even a real impact video? But a video on basically a remastered version?! Great job plebs
What's up with the constant right ear Beeps? 3:15 for example
22 was playable when the game came out. I remember playing ArmA II mods in like 2012 loaded 200+ mods milsim servers and getting a solid 11fps, plp got serious about 60fps min when LoL and other more competitive games became possible. But co-op, singleplayer, its not nearly as big of a deal, or at least wasn't before I knew how good I could have it.
Why should there a release date for HL3 if it isn't being developed?
Elijah (and anyone else who isn't all that keen on trying the original experience of older games) should really start the Half-Life series with Black Mesa. It is so well made, they really did the original HL1 justice. Some parts (like the last chapter) are actually far better than the original game
Would try out but I run AMD card
