  1. Is a hot dog a sandwich? 🌭
Also if you're curious how I set some of these up, read this: https://smarthomesolver.com/reviews/outrageous-automations/

  2. I've set my elderly Mom's house up with many similar automations, much to my siblings chagrin.
It tells her when it'd time to take her medication, detect when she has not moved out of her comfy chair for more than 30 minutes, detects whether she has drunk enough water for the day and reminds her, turns lights on and off as she moves throughout the house, along with fans and AC, depending on temperature, and knows what to do each evening when she goes to bed. And like yours, will tell her to go outside on a nice day for a bit of sun and fresh air. It will ring an ambulance if she calls out either certain phrases, or HELP! at a certain decibel level. Reminds her to go prepare her meals and also to call out to her speaker if she is running low on anything, adding it to her shopping list, amongst many other things. She likes being "watched over" by the "nice lady" who reminds her to do different random things (laundry, easy chores) every hour during the day.
Yes, my Mum has the beginnings of dementia and I often have to travel overseas for work and she refuses to go into aged-care. She's in hospital now after a fall recently whilst I was abroad. Even though she was stuck on the floor for a couple of hours, eventually she realised that she could call out to the "nice lady" and ask for help (she refuses to wear her MediAlert around her neck). The Police and Ambulance arrived a little while later. Thank goodness for these automations. It still does not stop me from always wondering whether she's okay.

  3. Is there an article coming showing how to set some of these up?

  4. One of my best automations i have is using the EPlite when an advert is detected on Disney+ or Amazon it takes a count of the number of people in the room and when the advert ends of the number is less it auto pauses until the number is equal or above. Really great for those pesky 30sec ads when you want to go to the kitchen or loo

  5. Sandwiches are surrounded by sliced bread. Burgers, regardless of the type of meat (beef, chicken, fish, something else) are in burger buns/rolls. Hot dogs are sausages/frankfurters in an elongated bun 🌭. Hence a sausage sandwich is not a hot dog, and a chicken burger 🍔 is not a sandwich

  6. “Takes that as a sliiiiight sign of aggression” 😂😂😂

  7. How’d you get the manual detection on the Lutron switches?

  8. Can you also explain either in a blog or a video on how to do all these automations? Tutorial videos are also greatly helpful. Please do consider doing them every now and then in addition to showcasing these awesome automation ideas

  9. Regarding bedroom light automation, why not use occupancy or pressure sensor detect someone sleeping on bed or crib already and turn on a light strip instead of whole lights?

  10. Taco

  11. Do you share these automations as blueprints?

  12. I put a vibration sensor on my wife's recliner

  13. Hot dog is a taco. Cereal is soap.

  14. so great.. going to watch again

  15. 1. A hotdog is NOT a sandwich
    2. 2:00 What sorcery is this 😮

  16. love the automatic detection of manual switches, that's clever. I have similar calendar integration for my son's school schedule as well. If there's an all-day event with "break" in the name, it skips his wakeup light and the "time to go to the bus" announcement automations without having to remember to turn them off for the day/week he's out of school.

  17. can you share the google calendar automations? that loosk to be worth while on my end

  18. How's automation turning the tv on and off?
    Thanks

  19. i also use my calendar to trigger a notification light.

  20. Technology is always right because it gives everyone what they want! So, is a hot dog a sandwich? Grok 3 says … Yes! … um and … No! 🤦🏻‍♂️ LOL

Whether a hot dog is a sandwich is a question that sparks debate, and the answer depends on how you define a “sandwich.” Here’s a breakdown of the argument:
Yes, a Hot Dog Could Be a Sandwich
    • Definition of a Sandwich: A sandwich is commonly understood as a food item with a filling enclosed between bread. A hot dog fits this description: it has a sausage (the filling) placed inside a bun (the bread).
    • Structure: Even though the bun is typically split rather than being two separate slices, it still serves the purpose of holding the filling in a bread-based enclosure, which aligns with a broad interpretation of a sandwich.
No, a Hot Dog Might Not Be a Sandwich
    • Bun Design: Unlike a traditional sandwich with two distinct pieces of bread, a hot dog bun is usually a single piece, partially split. Some argue this disqualifies it from being a true sandwich.
    • Cultural Distinction: In culinary and popular contexts, hot dogs are often treated as their own category, separate from sandwiches. For example, menus typically list “sandwiches” and “hot dogs” as distinct options, suggesting they’re not the same.
    Conclusion
Technically, a hot dog can be considered a sandwich because it involves a filling within bread. However, its unique form and cultural status lead many to view it as a separate entity. Ultimately, whether you call a hot dog a sandwich depends on how strictly or flexibly you apply the definition—so it’s up to you to decide!

  21. Love your automations Reed! Your dashboards were an inspiration for me to re-do my own, though with this months Home Assistant release, you should also be able to enable the open-ended announcements without having to use a wake-word to respond back. Home Assistant: "Do you want me to lower the blinds?" and you simply respond "Yes please". Though I believe it requires utilizing an LLM (Local or otherwise). Neat stuff and love how many goodies come out to Home Assistant on a monthly basis now. 🙂

  22. Love the video! I looked at your blog, how did you set up the value templates to tell what controlled the light? I'm having a hard time finding what entity/attribute will change when a device is controlled manually vs due to an automation. There's no way true or false is only thing you need write in, lol

  23. How do you do the google calendar automation? That was awesome!!

  24. How did you do the Apple TV automations? All through home assistant?
