Kiln and Ninja Theory are emblematic of why this decision is correct. These studios cost a LOT of money, and what does Microsoft have to show for it? Psychonauts 2 5 years ago, which was fine but not an amazing success story, meanwhile Ninja Theory spent almost a hundred million on Hellblade 2 and it lost money. These studios were mistakes and would probably not have open doors today had Microsoft not bought them, despite Microsoft’s famously hands off approach to management.
I totally get the fake bying apps. I even developed a chrome extenstion with the very same premise – but on the real websites. You browse, you add whatever you want to the cart – not trying to resist the temptation, but following it. Then you "buy" (my extension hooks up to the real button – but makes it very clear that it's a "fake" purchase), see the payment process, aaannd – you're done! One difference with that app you browse – in my ext you don't type any data – even for pretend, I decided that it would be safer to not touch even remotely any customer data.
It works even for me, I realise that most of the things we buy now – we don't have the need to actually posess or use them – we just want to make the purchase (say hi to your steam backlog).
please no more food stuff on the WAN
When the Iran war is going better than Microsoft 😂 But, debatable.
Microslop losing is a giant leap for Mankind
Never let them win!!!
Don't worry XBox fans Jensen just confirmed that agents will fill those roles. Not only that agents will be buying XBoxes and playing on them instead of you!
On the topic of Dopamine: this will mostly make sense for people with a shopping addiction. With an addiction you typically indulge and then feel regret afterwards, and with shopping it really sucks because you might’ve spent a ton of money. Here, not so much, and if it mimics the experience enough I think it might be interesting. The shopping addiction is less about spending money and getting something, and more about indulging in a fantasy of how much nicer your future will be when you choose and buy a “treat” for yourself.
41:00 So it's just devs public testing their frontend code
Please also transfer the timestamps over to the WAN show. It seems like it's just on LTT rn and that's probably the only frictionpoint I have.
40:09 the dopamine site seem more of an enabler and I can imagine children using it, but that will encourage them to have a compulsion to over consume online when they are adults. for someone with an addiction surely removing all thoughts of said addiction are better you wouldn't bring an alcoholic to a pub and only give them non alcoholic beer in which alcohol is just a movement of the hand away, with the bartender already pulling a crisp pint for you just a few taps and it'll be there.
will you guys be making the forever socks in large sizes? i have trouble finding socks that fit (48 european foot size) and i could use 5-10 pairs
I don't doubt that recent Double-Fine games might not have made any money, but I don't think it matters. Having a continuous stream of smaller well-reviewed titles that are exclusive to your platform is the best kind of PR/Marketing you can get. And it puts your platform in the public eye over and over again.
I believe that is what made Sony so succesful during the PS3 era. Sure you also need the bigger hitting tentpole titles in between to actually recoup the money. Shuhei Yoshida explained that way back in the days. But now even Sony stopped producing unique titles like Puppeteer, Journey or Tokyo Jungle.
Keeper reminds me of a title Sony would have published on PS3 back then. Microsoft needs a strong base of exclusives of varying degree if they want to be successful. Closing well-loved, well-received studios like Double Fine is a stupid move even if they save a few bucks in the short-term.
40:09 I am here for Luke's vitriol towards the "Dopamine" shopping sites.
It is as strong, if not more, as several rocket companies use it to 3D print rocket motors, or rocket motors part, and harder test of metal is hard to find.
Microsoft is being dogshit in every single field they operate it
No subtiles? Can you guys please turn subtitles on in the video? As a deaf viewer.
Bad Xbox news? Did they buy an "x-jet" or what? 😉
On the topic of buying up and then just shutting down Games Studios the reason as to why they do this are all Financial they're basing these decisions on Finance on financial ideas and theories so it's the same thing we see in like private equity.
Buy up a sector with a lot of money spending and cut fat for short term profitability. Except games doesn't work this way, but private equity does. That's all there is to this.
I just watched a video on @Gameranx where Falcon was arguing that games are too expensive and dev teams shouldn't need to be so big… I think Double Fine is a prime example of this. The kind of games they make are the kind that used to be made by 5-10 man teams at most. They should not have 100 people working for them and have this output, that is insane. They have indie studio output but are AA size. That doesn't work and it just seems insanely bloated.
Are these people really that dumb? Every industry does this it’s common practice .. they buy out every successful company with great products/patents/intellectual property/etc.. to simply shut it down and shelve them even if the product was the future.. it’s to make money on cheap regurgitated nonsense and remove competition.. and then only when absolutely necessary bring that one little piece of intellectual property or patent to make their own product better.. it’s like planned obsoletance mixed with private equity = like killer aquasition
18:00 psychonauts 2 was day one gamepass on PC and kiln and keeper came out on PC gamepass too. His comments just seem like cope to deflect blame on Microsoft.
20:40 again an absolute mistake it was day one on PC. Why even have a computer in front of you if you won't verify anything?
Cognitive dissonance gets thrown around a lot, but this is a good example: We buy an expensive game. If it's not very good, we have a problem. Either we didn't buy it, but that's hard to deny, or we are stupid – generally unacceptable, or, voila! The game is in fact really good after all… 😊
The dissonance here is the contradiction (I don't act idiotically) x (I did something idiotic). If this leads to anxiety – our "self" is threatened – we'll go far to resolve it.
This is one reason why ive always liked Nintendo they tend to only buy studios that make sense for there eco system like when they bought Bandai Namco Singapore because it was a studio well none for 4k assets.
Yeah so I'm kind of giving up on consoles I'm going back to PC playing games so I have to move a lot of my games from XBox to steam
I'm upset that the RIP isn't for Oliver Tree
Final Fantasy's boxart is iconic and consistent.
If I was Xbox and PlayStation I would start making games compatible with Linux for PC because there's a lot of people moving away from Windows operating system in a massive trove trove
Shame that Halo and all of Bethesta is crap nowdays. And those all smaller companies are better in quality games. Too bad many idiots dont buy them 😒
Also as to why the buying and now selling companies? Change in leadership for sure but also again the margins arent as good as before covid, remember that a lot of this happened just before that.
Lastly and this is bit conspiracy minded, but destruction of any competation or quality games to make modermn large triple aaa slop seem good.
4:40 its important to understand that studios may not only have work they can do but they may also have IP or master recordings… so if they have materials in their roster when they get bought it is possible the purchase also includes all the content they have made meaning they may have tons of material to draw from or from BIG tech companies train their AI with.. professional level material is like cheesecake rather than excrement potentially. if they have all the training data they can just train AI to do the work of the studio, they can obtain all the equipment presets and workflows, and likewise if there is equipment they can aquire all that potential rare custom equipment and consolidate it to a main production studio, headhunt only the best talent from each studio's roster and make a much more capable super team that can do more work due to having AI to aid it. All the code can also be fed to AI to pick or develop code sources, game IDEAS may also be available it really depends what the game studios actually kept PLUS it gives them the ability to make spinoffs of old games without needing to actually use the old developers. The people and locations don't matter as much if AI can just use the codesource to remake stuff without fear of copyright infringements, trademark or other claims depending what countries they are buying them up in and where they are based.
hello youtube lurkers
Microslop is at least 95% Gollum now chasing the precious A.I. ring 💍, and the Ex-Box changes were the last chance for them to do something that's liked by anyone besides shareholders.
Few information they weren't able to find out in the show about 3 studios mentioned in the first topic.
The 3 studios were acquired in 2019 because they were listed for sale among others due to financial trouble.
Compulsion Games released 3 games in around 15 plus years. After acquisition by Xbox, in 7 years and a $100 Million rumoured budget they made a game that didn't do well at all even after Game Pass. People didn't play it at all.
Ninja Theory in 6 years made 1 game that didn't sell at all on top of being just 3 hour long.
Double Fine in 5 years released 2 games that didn't do well at all and one even reviewed around 65 on Metacritic while their studio is in one of the most expensive state to work in.
They were given a freehand for a long time and very good budgets too. Sure, publisher and management didn't do well to oversee them but what were these studios thinking?
Make games that cater to niche of the niche. Few not even having thousand concurrent. Make worse games than previous games made by them and take a lot more time and money and nothing will happen to them?
