  5. Wow, seems like a lot of haters here. I tried this for the first time tonight, and in 30 minutes, I had a beautiful, raging fire that I’ve not had to touch in over an hour. Maybe it’s not great for survival, because if you’re freezing, 30 minutes is a loooong time to wait for heat. But for a sweet Christmas season fireplace fire that give you plenty of Yule log enjoyment without having to pause “It”s a Wonderful Life” every ten minutes to poke a dying log, this technique works!

  6. Am gonna try this!!! I've been using the traditional method since we bought our new house and it burns itself out in 15-25 minutes, or I have to keep playing with it to keep it going, or I have to keep adding smaller kindling to keep it going lots of work hopefully this is my solution. Thanks!

  7. This is the dumbest shit I've ever seen. Try starting a fire outside like this, when it's slightly damp or the wind is blowing. He talks about fire hacks and doesn't even know what a bloom is.

  8. Or…. You can do it the normal way and get a bigger fire more quick.

  18. This is called the "minion method". BBQ'er have been doing it for years for smoking food and keeping consistent temps.

  19. This system uses only the radiation heat from the fire. All the convection heat is lost. A part of the convection heat is used in a "regular" fire to dry and pre heat the larger pieces of wood. Also, small flames tend to go out in a bit of a breeze or ligth rain. If they are sheltered they won't go out as easily. This system would be my preference for lighting up the hearth though. Low maintenance, good dry wood to work with, no wind or rain messing it up. Perfect for indoor fires.
My personal preference for building a fire outdoors is a medium between this system and a "regular" fire. I put large blocks of wood down to serve as a base. Then build up my kindling on top of that in the regular fashion. Works like a charm!

  20. I take it you've read the necronomicon HH?

  22. This is great for combustion heaters too. It fills the firebox but doesn't overheat and can give you a 12 hour plus burn, even in modern, EPA compliant models.

  32. I dont need paper if i burn birch. It's bark is highly flameable on it's own. You simply take off some bark and ingite it. 🙂

  33. I wish the place I live in still allowed wood fires. Don't get me wrong, I like preserving things, but a wood fire has a charm like no other…
